The Law Department acts as legal advisors to, and attorneys and counsel for, the City Commission, the City Manager, Department Heads and all of the municipality's staff in matters relating to their duties consistent with Section 17 of the City Charter. In addition, the Law Department provides legal advice for all city Boards and Advisory Committees.

The Law Department provides written legal opinions when requested by the City Commission, City Manager or the head of any department or office upon questions of law involving their respective powers and duties. The Law Department performs all other duties required by the City Charter, the general laws of the State of Ohio and all municipal ordinances.
Prosecutor's Office
The Law Department employs an Assistant Law Director who acts in the capacity of Prosecuting Attorney for the City of Sandusky by prosecuting criminal and traffic offenses in the Sandusky Municipal Court for violations occurring within the jurisdictions of the City of Sandusky, Perkins Township, the Village of Bay View and the Village of Castalia. Office hours for the Prosecutor's Office are Monday through Thursday, 8:30 am - 1:30 pm.
